How We Do It

The Bury St Edmunds Speakers Club uses a system of training recommended by the Association of Speakers Clubs (ASC).

This system is laid down in an easy to follow guide available to all members and will take you, at your own pace, step-by-step through a series of proficiency levels in all aspects of speech delivery.

Each step leads to the next and covers different aspects of effective speech making.

You will learn:
  • To mean what you say
  • Speech construction
  • The use of gestures
  • The use your voice
  • Vocabulary and using word "pictures"
  • The use of notes
  • To be friendly and not frightened!
  • Audience rapport
  • The "Masterpiece" speech
At each meeting the members undertake a different role: From delivering a pre-written speech, or speaking impromptu, to being an evaluator of a speech through to chairing the meeting.

Throughout the meeting we provide a mutually supportive environment where members can practice, and develop, their speaking skills in a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

"Let thy speech be better than silence, or be silent" Dionysius of Halicarnassus
